Information about hours, circulation, and regulations

Lower Rio Grande Valley Collection

consists of materials dealing with south Texas from Laredo to Corpus Christi and south to Brownsville, McAllen, and Rio Grande City. Materials about the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila are also collected. Books, oral histories, and some maps are cataloged in the online catalog.

Major collections include:

Serials Collection includes newspapers and other periodicals published in South Texas and Northern Mexico.

Chicano Collection includes newspapers and other materials pertaining to the uprising of the Chicano movement from Texas, California, and Arizona.  The Chicano movement was a complex movement including a celebration of the culture of Mexican Americans, and protests seeking political empowerment and civil rights.

Map Collection covering South Texas and Northern Mexico.


Search Title:  Map Collection to retrieve a partial list of maps that have been cataloged and organized by collection. You may also search by keyword or subject for the city, county, or region.  There is no need to capitalize, but you do need to abbreviate Texas as "tex"

     Subject: edinburg tex maps

     Subject: hidalgo county tex maps

     Subject: lower rio grande valley tex maps

Oral histories from local people are available on audio-cassette tape.


Search Title:  Oral history Rio Grande Valley Historical Collection.

Reference Files of local materials containing newspaper clippings, pamphlets and other ephemera.

Genealogy Resources are available for those researching their family histories for the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Northeast Mexico

UTPA Publications and Archives


Pan American Collections  includes records, catalogs, posters, brochures, newsletters, and other items published by the University.  The Pan American Newspaper is also available online


Pan American Archives includes documents, photographs, and other unpublished materials created by the University.


University publications, such as the college catalog, yearbooks, and budgets may also be found in the online catalog. Search Author:  University of Texas--Pan American


Student theses may be found in the online catalog.  Search Title : University of Texas--Pan American thesis  to look specifically for a thesis or dissertation


You may also search by Advanced Keyword with the major subject.  Enter the subject (for example: educational leadership) in the first search box, then "pan american thesis" in the second search box.  Select the Location: Special Collections.  This will retrieve most theses in this category.




Timeline of the History of The University of Texas-Pan American University

Edinburg College opened its doors in September, 1927.  Since then our community has gone through 6 name changes, and has grown from a two-year college to a doctoral degree research institution.
